Letterman's Latest Trespasser
      October 22, 1998

Now might be a good time for David Letterman to invest in a new home security system—and possibly a moat. The much-stalked late night talk show host apparently has a new admirer.

The Associated Press reports that police in New Canaan, Conn., arrested a South Carolina woman on Sept. 28 for allegedly trespassing on Letterman's estate.

Nellie Ruth Shirley, 39, was charged with misdemeanor criminal trespass after police, responding to a "suspicious vehicle" report, found her in the funnyman's driveway.

She has been freed without bail and ordered to stay away from the CBS Late Show host's property.

On Tuesday, Shirley's lawyer asked the judge to clear her client's record if she completes the terms of her probation and steers clear of Letterman's house. A hearing is set for Dec. 1.

Shirley's arrest came just a week before the suicide of longtime Letterman stalker Margaret Ray, 46, who was picked up repeatedly over the last decade for trespassing on the comedian's estate and breaking into his house.

Ray's most daring exploit came in 1988, when she was caught driving Letterman's Porsche. When questioned, Ray, who had a long history of mental illness, claimed to be his wife and mother to the nonexistent Dave Jr.

Ray threw herself in front of a train in Colorado on Oct. 5. Letterman called her death "a sad end to a confused life."
