David Letterman Opens Up
February 7, 1997
The usually evasive David Letterman has opened up to TV
Guide, and reveals, among other things, a deep admiration for
Drew Barrymore. "She's such a sweet person. I'm just tickled pink
that she's alive and happy and doing well and will be a huge star
after all her problems in life," he says of the actress. "And then
naked. Throw that in. That's a rare bonus," referring to
Drew's well-publicized breast-flashing on his desk--a
gift for Letterman's birthday. And while he doesn't apologize for
making Cindy Crawford cry last October, he does offer an
explanation. "I made fun of her makeup. But I didn't think that it
would hurt her feelings. Then, later, I find out that her eye makeup
wasn't silly at all; that's the way people are wearing it," he says,
adding that "I shouldn't be let out of the house." TV Guide
also allowed a few celebrities to turn the tables on Letterman and
ask the talk show host some questions. Letterman gave a
bone-chilling answer to Kathie Lee Gifford's query about what
would make him happy. "Four simple words," he says. "Mrs. Kathie Lee
Letterman."
