Letterman Chipper Following Surgery
      January 17, 2000

Everyone knows that 52-year-old David Letterman has the prankish nature of a much younger man. But the heart?

Very much so, says the surgeon who performed successful emergency quintuple bypass surgery Friday after a cardio checkup revealed the longtime late-night gabber was suffering from a blocked artery. Dr. O. Wayne Isom tells USA Today that Letterman has "the heart muscle of a 20-year-old."

The surgery was performed at New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Isom also says that the Late Show host has a "very good" chance of making a complete recovery. The good doctor predicts a home recuperation period of six to eight weeks. Letterman's personal physician, Dr. Louis J. Aronne, and his cardiologist, Dr. Martin Post, reportedly are of the opinion that it's too soon to determine how long a recovery may take.

A Letterman spokesman reports that his boss, who is expected to be hospitalized for at least two or three more days, is in a fine fettle: "David is in good spirits, joking with the doctors and nurses. Everything went well, and his recovery has been excellent."

CBS will air reruns of Late Show With David Letterman while the man himself is recovering.
